Sometimes the struggle is real.
The struggle of a work-from-home person.
I know people think it’s all unicorns and rainbows.
But sometimes there’s this crazy stuff that comes up and I’m all like, “Wow, I didn’t think about that.”
So this is the article where I write about the times when working from home isn’t amazing.
When Working From Home is a Struggle
Here are some of my problems I’ve encountered.
I Forget How to Converse
Sometimes when I work from home I forget what real people conversations are like.
I work from home via the internet so I don’t even Skype or have phone conversations with people.
I just email with people and usually I don’t even have to do that.
So I forget what real conversations are with people other than my family.
I forget how difficult it could be to start a conversation.
Or keep a conversation going.
I think it might also be partly due to my introvert personality.
But I dread situations where I have to talk with people.
Solution: Pretend talking to people during the day when I’m really just talking to myself
Sounds a little crazy!
I Am Always At Work
I always have work to do and I am always at work.
I have an office but there is still that lingering voice in my head telling me that while I’m watching TV I could also be doing some research for my project.
Or while I’m cooking dinner I could be listening to that work-related podcast.
I know that my income is tied directly to the amount of work I do.
So I always feel like I could and should do more.
Solution: Make up a schedule and write in times to be off work and doing something to occupy my hands so I can’t consider typing.
My Coworkers Suck
We have 2 adorable cats.
But they seem to always want attention when I’m working.
And by attention that means my big cat comes and tries to sleep on my keyboard. Or my books. Or whatever else is taking my attention.
Solution: Take breaks to play with cats and get them tired so they’ll sleep.
There Are Always Chores to be Done
I notice things.
I notice that I could clean the bathroom sink.
Or do a load of laundry.
Or reorganize the shoe closet.
Luckily for me, I also like to procrastinate chores.
So I have a tendency to both notice and ignore these things.
But there is a distraction simply in the noticing.
Dude, that’s a quotable right there, right?Deep Thought Today: There is distraction just in the noticing!Click To Tweet
There’s always a solution to a problem. Sometimes it might be a little crazy. Maybe it won’t work. But the truth is that I do love working from home and I wouldn’t change that. But I know I can do it better. I can make this experience better for myself and then also better for my family.
