Have you ever been to a party where you walk in and see your friends, friends of your friends, and some complete strangers? Some of the people are interesting, funny, rude, obnoxious or a little of all of those things. There are some conversations you want to join and others you want to avoid. That is Plurk, for me!
I joined Plurk on June 1, 2008 and since that time I’ve made 277 Plurks, 3046 Responses and invited 4 Friends. I have 169 friends, 22 fans and 1118 profile views.
But what does this mean to my real life?
I spent many hours at Plurk when I first started out. But after a few days, okay, maybe more like weeks, I started to find more balance.
- What I gained from Plurk
- Interaction with wonderful bloggers like Problogger, Daisy and Live Crunch.
- Laughs with amusing people like faboomama, Squirehogg and Becca.
- Inspiration from artists like Susiescrapper, Bevsyarncrazy and Andiesmith.
- Conversation with other parents like Puglove, Tinaladuke, NancyNally and Signingmama.
- Information from techy folks like PapaMike, KDFrawg and apratts.
Is it all about the karma?
At Plurk you have a “Karma Level”. Mine is currently 63.94 with the highest level having been 65.12
I admit that early on I did check my karma every time I logged on.
I was always happy when it increased and upset when it didn’t.
I tried to Plurk on a regular basis to make sure I’d get more Karma.
However, I soon realized that when I had limited time on Plurk I should spend it by Plurking things people might actually care about.
So I have tried my best to keep out the plurks for the sake of gaining Karma.
I also avoid participating in karma related conversations!
So I gotta go now!
Is it worth the time?
For me it is.
The balance I’ve found includes me logging in for a few minutes when I am taking a break from work.
I send a Plurk or two and reply to what my friends have Plurked about.
I laugh at some of the conversations.
I follow some links they’ve posted.
I view some videos or photos.
I invite these people in to learn more about myself
They’ve done the same and I appreciate it.
So if you are interested, you can view my Plurk Timeline.

You’ve captured many of my current feelings towards Plurk as well but have managed to say them much better than I ever could. I value having you as one of my plurky friends.

Rebecca, you were one of the people on Plurk I missed while I had limited plurking time the last three days being at the autism conference I was attending! For all the reasons you mentioned, it really is an incredible community there…I’ve learned a lot and laughed a lot with people there.

It’s great that you’ve found such use for Plurk. Quite honestly I haven’t spent too much time trying to find its value; I’ve heard mixed things about it.
