Does this look like exercise-induced asthma?

April 11, 2008

I had never heard of exercise-induced asthma before the Summer of 2001. One night we had a scare that we had not been prepared for.

It was a cool evening and we were at the ballpark watching dad play ball.
I was chasing The Kid up and down a little grassy incline nearby.

Then he sat down and the look on his face was something I wouldn’t forget.
My sweet 3-year-old had a helpless look on his face as he sat there struggling to breathe.

The next few minutes were a blur.
I remember encouraging him to breathe, breathe, breathe.
It seemed like forever until I heard him say he was okay.

The next day his pediatrician diagnosed him with

exercise-induced asthma.

From that day on we kept inhalers with us at all times.
The Kid used his inhaler before playing outside or running around.
We watched him carefully to make sure he was always breathing properly.

The pediatrician also advised that he “warm up” before exercise.
Of course he agreed that it’s difficult to get a little kid to “warm up”.
He seemed to function on not wanting to walk speed or run speed - there is no “warm up” speed for him.

We did all we could and took all of the precautions.
Now in 2008 it has been over a year since he has used his inhaler.
He’s “outgrown” the asthma and we’ve been able to worry a little less.

As I watch him running and having fun I am thankful that asthma and those inhalers are just mom worries and no longer a worry for The Kid!

I still haven’t borrowed any books from the library.
Honestly, I haven’t even read the pdf’s.
So I don’t know much about Vegan or Vegetarian.
I did find some blogs with recipes and photos.

The Food Looked Beautiful!

I am sure I’ll come across many more websites with appealing vegan recipes. But what is Seitan? and Leeks? Grr…more research to do!

Researching Vegetarian Lifestyle

During my childhood I remember making some changes in our eating habits.
Probably around the age of 7, my mom used to make soy milk at home for us to drink and we ate tofu and bean sprouts on a regular basis.

During high school, I subscribed to Wildlife Conservation.
My sister and I stopped eating red meat in an effort to “save the animals”.
A few years later, when we tried a hamburger I remember thinking it tasted like cardboard.

Now, at the age of 30 I’m looking to improve my health.
I really want to feel healthy.
I also want to set a good example for my kids.

So I’m looking into a vegetarian lifestyle.
I have placed holds on some books from my local library.
Vegetarian Times is offering two free trial issues and a free Quick and Easy Diners pdf.
Veggie 123 has a free E-book.
Go Veg.com has a free Vegetarian Starter Kit.

I am looking forward to learning more about the vegetarian and vegan lifestyles. I am not sure to what extent I might adopt one of these lifestyles but I definitely think it is worth researching.

If you are vegetarian or vegan I would love to hear from you and any comments or advice you can give!
